Efren Manalang Reyes was born on August 26, 1954, in Philippines. He is popularly known as “Bata” or “the magician.” He got these nicknames for his prowess in playing pool. Efren is manly known for being a Filipino professional pool player and is often regarded the greatest pool player of all time.

Efren gained more recognition for challenging one-pocket discipline. Efren success in his career also saw him get inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame. Efren’s birth place is Pampanga in Philippines. However, he moved to Manila at age 5 where he lived with his uncle who owned a pool hall.

While living with his uncle, Efren cleaned the hall and even slept on the pool table. During this time, his short height pushed him to play pool while standing on Coca-Cola cases. Well, Efren started gambling at a young age. He won his first money at age nine and he proceeded to play games for money.

At some point, people started avoiding playing against him for money. Reyes opted to play other games such as balkline where he could find competitors.

By 1978, Efren Reyes was a professional pool player. He even competed in a Rotation competition between Philippines and Japan. As part of the team, they won two years in a row until the competition completed.

Efren also won the All Japan Championship after defeating Japanese champion Takeshi Okumura in nine-ball. In 1983, he competed with Pepito Dacer in the Philippine Rotation Championship final. He ended up defeating him and was considered the best player in the country.

Efren was so good that he even got banned from participating in some tournaments to give other people chances to battle it out in his absence. Unfortunately for the country, this situation pushed Reyes to relocate to the Unites States in 1985.

In the United States, he used an alias to set the pace for his career but was soon discovered after he won his first tournament. In that year, he came third in another championship in the United States.

He proceeded to win more tournaments and this pushed his career further. He won several prizes and this helped create his wealth.
