Early Life of Jack White

Jack White is the youngest of 10 kids. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 9, 1975. Jack’s birth name is John Anthony Gillis and his parents are Teresa and Gorman Gillis. Jack’s parents worked for the Catholic Church in Detroit.

His father worked as the Building Maintenance Superintendent while his mother was the secretary in the office of the Cardinal of the Archdiocese in Detroit. Jack White was raised as a Catholic and he was an altar boy when he was young.

Jack was religious and was determined to become a priest someday. He was even accepted to join the seminary in Wisconsin but he changed his mind after he realized that joining the seminary meant that he couldn’t bring his music instruments with him.

Early Career

After Jack opted out of the seminary, he joined Cass Technical High School and he participated music playing trombone and drums in the school band. Jack then met Muldoon, a friend of his parents and it is Muldoon who exposed him to rock. He even urged White to form a band.

Muldoon and White then formed their band and named it Upholsterers. The band recorded their first album “Makers of High-Grade Suites.” While in high school, Jack White met Meg White and the two formed an inseparable bond that worked in their favor.

The White Stripes Band

Meg White focused on learning drums in 1997 and the two friends ended up forming The White Stripes band. Their band started out as an underground garage rock music scene in Detroit but they ended up getting signed into the Italy Records, an independent garage punk label.

Jack and Meg then released the “White Blood Cells” album that was a critical and commercial success. The band worked on several projects and their songs were becoming a hit. Some even reached #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Although the band split in 2011, their time together helped them grow and pushed their name high in the industry. Jack White also worked as part of The Raconteurs band and this too helped him push his name and achieve financial success.
