Incorporation

Atlanta incorporated as a city in 1847. As we told you earlier, it came into existence as a transportation hub and this region was the end of the railroad. That’s why during the time of its incorporation, Atlanta was called Terminus. Then people changed its name to Marthasville and later became Atlanta, which denotes that the city has grown as a transportation hub.

How Did The Settlement Started Blooming In Atlanta?

Since Atlanta was a transportation hub and a railroad station, a lot of businesses started in the area. With the increase of business activities, some residents started living there because they got better access and quick supply of goods and materials. As initial settlers started living in the area, they bought land for a very low price in the beginning. What Economic Activities Were Conducted In Early Settlements?

During the early settlement of Atlanta, people were more engaged in trading business. Since Atlanta was a railroad station, they unloaded goods in Atlanta and businesses started selling those goods to nearby places. But after the Civil War, the settlers of Atlanta got engaged in commercial activities like construction, industrialisation, manufacturing, warehousing, and retail businesses. People from nearby areas started coming to Atlanta to buy goods because Atlanta started manufacturing daily needs goods.

Challenges Faced By Atlanta In The Past

Since we are talking about the history of this city, let’s talk about the challenges that the city and its settlers have faced since its incorporation.

1. Civil War and Burning of Atlanta (1864)

In 1864, General Sherman’s troops destroyed and burnt a large area of Atlanta that caused widespread destruction all over the place. Actually Atlanta supported military forces and it served as a base for some military operations during the civil war. In pursuit of victory, General Sherman ordered that the city must be destroyed, so that they could destroy the military base in the process.

2. Atlanta Race Riot

There was an allegation that some black men assaulted white women, which later proved to be a false allegation. In September 1906, a mob of white men attacked the neighbourhood of Atlanta and about 25 blacks died along with two whites in the process. Hundreds of people got injured and there was a massive damage to a lot of properties.

The history of Atlanta is very widespread and the city that we see as one of the most prominent place and a very successful one now stands tall on the ruins, challenges, hardships, and hardworks and the efforts that its early settlers have put in to bring the city to a state that is it in right now as of 2024.
